Ryder Cup format and schedule

Ryder Cup 2020 Event Schedule

The Ryder Cup is supposed to open its 43rd chapter in the United States between September 25 to 27, 2020. The event would take place in Whistling Straits, Haven, Wisconsin, and would have the European champions against the USA by a considerable margin.

The US team will be led by Steve Stricker who was declared as the captain on February 20th, 2019, and Padraig Harrington will be the European team captain. Jim Furyk and Robert Karlsson will be vice-captains for the US and Europe teams respectively.

Ryder Cup 2020 Format

Spread over three days and strategically scheduled over a weekend which includes Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Day 1 and Day 2 of the event will have 4 foursome and 4 fourball matches each. Day 3 which is on a Sunday will have 12 single matches. In 2018, Europe won the cup against the USA by a 17½–10½ victory. This time, 14½ points are needed by the home team to retain the cup and for Europe to win the same.

While the captains have already been decided, the rest of the team players will be decided on the basis of selection criteria entailing the following aspects,

  • 2019 Major Championships: 1 Point per $1,000 earned
    • The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open & The Open
  • 2019 WGC Events and The Players Championship: 1 Point per $2,000 earned

Ryder Cup 2020 Team news

Ryder Cup Venue Updates

The 43rd chapter of the Ryder Cup 2020 will be spread over a course of 3 days. It is strategically scheduled over a weekend which includes Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Day 1 and Day 2 of the event will have 4 foursome and 4 fourball matches each. Day 3 which is on a Sunday will have 12 single matches. In 2018, Europe won the cup against the USA by a 17½–10½ victory. This time, 14½ points are needed by the home team to retain the cup and for Europe to win the same.

Now let us take a look at the Ryder Cup Teams and Captains

The United States of America (USA) will be competing against Europe. The US team will be led by Steve Stricker who was declared as the captain on February 20th, 2019, and Padraig Harrington will be the European team captain. Jim Furyk and Robert Karlsson will be vice-captains for the US and Europe teams respectively.

Stricker has been an old-time Ryder Cup champion in 2008 and 2016 and has served as the vice-captain in other seasons. He is a 12-time winner of the PGA Tour and has also played in five President Cups. Harrington is a three-time major champion from Dublin, Ireland. While selecting both these captains, Stricker and Harrington, the rules for selecting the team players will be done a few weeks before the game, according to the following criteria,

  • 2019 Major Championships: 1 Point per $1,000 earned
    • The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open & The Open
  • 2019 WGC Events and The Players Championship: 1 Point per $2,000 earned
    • WGC-Mexico Championship; WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship; The Players Championship; WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational; WGC-HSBC Champions
  • 2020 Regular PGA Tour events: 1 point per $1,000 earned
    • Beginning January 1, 2020, through the end of the second FedEx Cup Play-Offs (BMW Championship), August 23, 2020; includes the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event and WGC events
  • 2020 Opposite Field PGA TOUR events will NOT receive points
  • 2020 Major Championships: 2 Points per $1,000 earned for the Winner; 1.5 Points per $1,000 earned for all others to make the cut
    • The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open & The Open

Accordingly, for the slots that are left, decisions will be made between the last week of August to the first week of September. The captains also believe that the course setup has a lot to do with which team can favor more for the Whistling Straits Ryder Cup tournament this year. As captains usually have to level out the playing field, Harrington is of the belief that this will somehow get sorted on its own in the next 30 or 40 years and it will be easier to decide the outcome of a game, more on the skill of a player rather than the process of leveling out the field.

To Sum Up

We cannot wait for the Ryder Cup tournament to commence shortly and hope that it happens this year itself. It will be a tournament worth watching having both all-time winners compete against each other, and get to know the entire list of players competing for the big trophy.
